Harjoitteluaika

Harjoittelun voi aloittaa vuosittain aikaisintaan huhti-toukokuussa. Harjoittelu tulee aloittaa viimeistään hakua seuraavan vuoden maaliskuussa. Harjoittelujaksojen pituudet ovat 3-6 kuukautta harjoittelupaikasta riippuen. Osa työnantajista ottaa harjoittelijan mieluummin 6 kuukaudeksi kuin 3 kuukaudeksi. CIMOn tuki harjoittelulle on enimmillään 3 kuukautta.

Placements are available:

Placement availability will vary greatly based on Spanish language skills of the trainee. Most placements are available throughout the year. School-based education programs may not be available from mid-December to early March, as this is the period for school holidays. Some schools run vacaciones útiles programs (summer school) in January and February and many orphanages operate year-round, so work with children or education programs are available year-round.

Many companies and organizations are much less busy in December and January due to Christmas preparations and vacations. Trainees should plan to start before October to ensure they feel comfortable working or traveling independently during this time. Consider also the weather where you´d like to do your traineeship -- the sierra and selva have a rainy season from November through March and some work is not available or is more difficult at this time.

A robust market for internships exist in Peru, particularly in Lima and other large cities. Peruvian university students often complete paid prácticas (internships) during their studies. and many of these students stay for at least one year with their employer

The country has three distinct regional and cultural areas -- the coast, mountains, and jungle. Our office is located in Lima, so it is easiest for us to coordinate and supervise positions in Lima. We have some contacts in each of these regions and will make an effort to offer placements in specific regions if requested, however not all placements in all regions may be possible. Flexibility is key when planning to work in Peru!

The coastal area is arid desert in many places, with fertile valleys fed by rivers which run from the Andes mountains to the Pacific Ocean. A large portion of Peru´s population lives in this relatively small region; principal cities along the costa are Lima, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura, Ica, and Tacna. The costa has two main seasons -- sunny summer from December to March and wet/humid cold winter from June to September with variable weather in between. Many organizations in this region are small-, medium-, and large-sized NGOs as well as public and private schools which work on urban poverty issues, human rights, and education.

The sierra, or Peruvian highlands, refers to the Andean mountain region. This area is less populated and is home to Peru´s largest and best-known indigenous group, the quechuas, who are the descendants of the Incas. Principal cities in the sierra are Cusco, Puno, Cajamarca, Huaraz, Ayacucho, and Arequipa. The sierra has two seasons -- rainy and warmer from November to March and dry but colder from May to September. Many organizations in this region are small- to medium-sized NGOs which work on rural poverty issues and subsistence agriculture.

The jungle area occupies about 60% of Peruvian territory but is home to only 11% of the country´s population. This area is home to many indigenous groups, many of whom are nomadic and some of whom live in voluntary isolation from the modern world. Principal cities in the selva are Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Tarapoto, and Pucallpa. The selva has two seasons -- rainy and warm from November to April and drier and warm (although still humid) from May to October. Many organizations in this region are small NGOs which work on environmental conservation, agriculture, and environmental education.

Work environments, particularly outside of large cities and in provincia (areas outside Lima), are relatively relaxed compared to European and American workplaces. Planning is often less important than meeting current or near-future needs and goals in the workplace, particularly in small NGOs. This often requires an adjustment period for foreign interns and can lead to culture shock in the workplace. Flexibility and adaptation of expectations help quite a bit with adjusting to Peruvian culture in the workplace.
