Työtehtävät BACKGROUND

The UNDP has partnered with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Africa Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) to assist Africa Union (AU) member states to implement the Africa Mining Vision (AMV). The AMV was adopted by African heads of state and government in 2009 and has the promotion of “transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources” to underpin “broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development” as its core objective. In this regard, the extractives team at the UNDP Africa Regional Service Centre works with its Country Offices across the African continent to assist African governments to implement the AMV.

The internship is an opportunity for a self-motivated individual to participate in a structured internship aimed at equipping the intern with three main skills:
• Equipping the intern with the skills required to use ‘Big data’ and Big data analaysis concepts and methods’ in development policy analysis,
• Understanding the main legal and policy issues in the mining industry in Africa, and
• Equipping the intern with qualitative data analysis skills.

INSTITUTIONAL ARRANGEMENT/REPORTING RELATIONS

UNDP will facilitate and provide administrative and logistical support including workspace, Internet access and administrative support to enable her/him to perform her/his assignment. The intern will report to the senior policy advisor. The intern will also have the guidance and mentoring of the extractives team members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Regional adviser on extractives, the intern shall perform, inter alia, the following tasks:

Research:
• The collection, categorization and warehousing of various mining legislation and policy in specific African countries;
• With the assistance and guidance of the Regional Programme adviser, conduct initial analysis of data;
• Frequent liaise with relevant UNDP Country Offices to get updates on mineral policy and/or law reforms.

More specific focus will be decided in consultation with the intern taking into account his/her skills development interests.

• Interest in big data and big data handling and analysis;
• Strong analytical aptitude, communication and presentation skills;
• Good organizational, time management and strong interpersonal skills;
• Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines;
• Attention to details and ability to work independently and effectively;
• Computer proficiency: MS Office.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience

• Experience conducting research in the field of development,
• Data visualization and analysis skills and experience are a distinct advantage (even without development experience)
• Outstanding writing, editing and fact-checking skills, attention to detail and the ability to review and provide comments on knowledge products
• Familiarity with the UN system and development agenda.

Language

• Fluency in English although fluency in both English and French will be a particularly distinct advantage.
