The UNDP has partnered with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Africa Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) to assist Africa Union (AU) member states to implement the Africa Mining Vision (AMV). The AMV was adopted by African heads of state and government in 2009 and has the promotion of “transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources” to underpin “broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development” as its core objective. In this regard, the extractives team at the UNDP Africa Regional Service Centre works with its Country Offices across the African continent to assist African governments to implement the AMV. The UNDP Africa Regional Service Centre extractives team therefore seek a self-motivated intern to support the work of the team.


UNDP will facilitate and provide administrative and logistical support including workspace, Internet access and administrative support to enable her/him to perform her/his assignment. The intern will report to the senior policy advisor. The intern will also have the guidance and mentoring of the extractives team members.


Under the supervision of the extractives global senior policy adviser, the intern shall perform, inter alia, the following tasks:


  • The collection of various macroeconomic and legal data related to the extractives sector on the continent;
  • Actively participate, and where possible lead, in the development of data visualization and analysis;
  • Manage files and online database of related documents in a structured way.

Programme Implementation:

  • Draft, review and edit concepts notes, knowledge products and presentations;
  • Participate in meetings and perform other programme implementation support tasks as required.

Knowledge Management and Communication:

  • Prepare relevant communications materials (brochure, newsletter, success stories etc.);
  • Assist in developing and disseminating knowledge products developed by both the global and regional extractives team

More specific focus will be decided in consultation with the intern taking into account his/her skills development interests.

Technical / Functional Competencies:

  • Good writing and researching skills;
  • Strong analytical aptitude, communication and presentation skills;
  • Good organizational, time management and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work flexibly and meet tight deadlines;
  • Attention to details and ability to work independently and effectively;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office.

  • Experience conducting research in the field of development,
  • Data visualization and analysis skills and experience are a distinct advantage (even without development experience)
  • Outstanding writing, editing and fact-checking skills, attention to detail and the ability to review and provide comments on knowledge products
  • Familiarity with the UN system and development agenda.


Fluency in English and knowledge of French
