Training period
30.1.-31.7.2017, 6 months and 13.2.-12.8.2017, 6 months (one trainee per period will be selected)
Tasks
  • responsibility for a variety of features and news items each week, i.e. researching and compiling material and content, conducting interviews as necessary, writing articles and features, editing submissions, editing and laying out articles and advertising
  • representing Kanadan Sanomat at various events in Toronto's and Canada's Finnish communities and reporting and writing articles on those events, some photography will also be required
  • representing assigned Finnish communities at the paper (i.e. to make sure the paper is covering events and communities from all parts of Canada)
  • participation in the technical production of the pages (Pagemaker and Photoshop skills required) may be included
  • assisting in the updating and development (both content and creative) of the internet pages of Kanadan Sanomat
  • other tasks and duties as required
  • being an integral, active and enthusiastic member of a team environment
  • the duties are bilingual, assignments would appear in the paper either in English or Finnish
Requirements

Requirements:

  • end level studies in journalism or communications
  • work experience in journalism
  • fluncy in written and spoken English
  • at least basics of photography
  • interest in promoting Finnish culture and Finnish language and in explaining Finnish phenomena for the Finnish-Canadian audience

Assets:

  • Skills in InDesign and Photoshop
  • proof of English language skills (e.g. university certificate)
Salary CIMO scholarship 1180 euros / month
Working language English (application should be written in English) and Finnish
Accommodation The employer will help in finding accommodation.
Additional information

Working hours are generally from nine to five but the editorial staff has to cover some weekend functions, and some travelling is necessary. Operational late evening hours are also possible. The weekly working hours are normally 40 hours to flexible.
