Brief Description:

The LAMPTESS project operated in May 2008 to March 2010 under the ICI funding programme of the MFA. At that time VITRI acted as the northern public organization partner, while the GOSS MAF/ Directorate of Forestry acted as the southern public partner. As sub-contractors and later (5/2011 – 12/2012) in the first phase of the HEI-ICI programme the LAMPTESS had Upper Nile University and University of Juba as the main South Sudanese partners. In the current second phase of the project there has again been some change in the partner situation as seen below on this fact sheet. The changes have been caused by foremost security and logistical reasons currently prevailing in South Sudan.

The project purpose for the second phase of HEI-ICI LAMPTESS is to build up the institutional and human capacity at the College of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Studies at University of Juba and at Kagelu Forestry Training Centre to deliver decisive contribution to the improvement of South Sudanese sustainable natural resources management and agroforestry- and landscape management-based rural development. This will be achieved by enhancing the education of teachers, support a direct leading role in rural development and in finding new solutions to increasing climate change and food security challenges. The below key results are grouped and relevant for both southern institutions.

Result Area(s):

  • Improved quality and relevance of higher education
  • Strengthened the role and relevance of the HEIs in development

Key Results to be Achieved:

  • Project overall management tasks such as project steering committee meetings, progress and other reporting, procurement and logistics, study tour to Finland, forest/environment sector networking in South Sudan and attracting of other funding.
  • Training activities related to (a) agroforestry research methods, data collection and statistical analysis of results, (b) nursery, seed handling and selection of sites and tree species for planting, (c) pedagogical skills and gender sensitivity, and (d) forest business development and management etc.
  • A new Landscape Management Plan will be prepared for the Juba University demonstration farm area and later updated with activities performed during the second phase of LAMPTESS and new plans for continuation landscape management presented on maps.
  • Establishment of a new tree and horticulture nursery and a fish pond on the demonstration farm and support to the seedling production at the central nursery and an out-planting scheme in Rajef County so that some 20,000 rural households will benefit from these operations.
  • An agroforestry-based Extension Plan will be produced for the project field site in Rajaf County and participatory management and utilization guidelines on community forests and another on state forest land in Central Equatoria State prepared.
