Support to post-graduates and researchers outside Finland

The Finnish National Agency for Education provides support to students with a Master’s degree who carry out post-graduate studies or research in Finnish language and culture or Finno-Ugric studies at universities outside Finland.

There are two types of scholarships available: scholarships for Finnish language and culture and scholarships for kindred peoples. In each case, the application for the scholarship is submitted by the Finnish university.

Scholarships for Finnish language and culture

You can have a scholarship to do research in Finnish language and culture or Finno-Ugric studies in a Finnish university from 3 to 12 months. You can also apply for a short-term scholarship of 1 to 4 weeks, for example, to visit an archive or to attend a seminar.

There are two application deadlines per year: the 1st deadline is on 30 April and the 2nd on 31 October.

Scholarships for kindred peoples

The scholarships for kindred peoples are intended for post-graduate students and researchers who

  • study Finno-Ugric languages, and
  • study at universities in the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia.

The scholarship period is from 1 to 12 months. There are two application deadlines per year: the first deadline is on 15 April and the second on 30 September.
