Summer courses in Finland

Every summer, CIMO arranges intensive courses of Finnish language and culture at different levels and in different parts of Finland.

All courses cover 10 ECTS credits. Tuition, teaching materials and accommodation are free of charge for the students.

Who are the courses intended for?

These summer courses of Finnish language and culture are intended for students of Finnish language and culture at universities outside Finland. The students should be at least 18 years old.

The goals and contents of the courses

The language courses aim to activate and improve the students’ language skills in a real-life setting. The students will revise grammar, read, write, listen and, most of all, speak: only Finnish is spoken on the course.

As the summer courses require intensive study, homework and a final assignment, the students are expected to make a commitment to the course.

At the end of the course, the students are presented with a certificate on their performance. A final exam/written assignment and class participation will be taken into account in student assessment. To earn the certificate, the students need to attend the course for the entire duration.

How to apply for the courses?

The deadline for applications is 1 March Finnish time (+2 UTC).

Applications which arrive after this date will not be considered.

The applicants will be notified by email by 30 April.

A number of applicants are placed on a reserve list. If a student cancels participation, students on the reserve list will be notified during May–June.

Guidelines for students

  • Send your application by email to suomenkesakurssit(at) Please fill in the application form in Finnish and send it as an email attachment file, preferably as a Word document.

  • To fill in the application form, use the self-assessment grid of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (link on the right-hand corner of the page).

  • CIMO will send you a confirmation on receipt of the application. If you don’t receive any confirmation, please contact CIMO before the deadline.

  • If you have attended a CIMO course previously, you can only apply to take a more advanced course this time.

  • Students at Nordic universities are not eligible to apply for courses I and IIA.

Students of Nordic universities must send their application by email both to CIMO (suomenkesakurssit(at) and to their local contact person (contact details below).

The application form must be complemented by a teacher’s statement and two compositions that your teacher will tell you more about.

Travel grant

At the same time as submitting their course application, students can apply for a CIMO travel grant on the same course application form. Travel grants cannot be applied retrospectively.

The travel grant may be claimed back, if the student does not finish the course.

Note! Students of Nordic universities are not eligible to apply for a CIMO travel grant. They should apply for a grant in the country where they are studying before the course begins. They should pay for the travel and accommodation themselves with the grant awarded. More information is available from the contact person in each Nordic country (contact details below).

Guidelines for teachers

  • More detailed instructions and the composition topics are sent on the ukanet mailing list before the new year.

  • Send a statement by email on each applicant by 1 March to suomenkesakurssit(at)
