Summer courses in Finland

Each summer, the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) organises intensive courses in the Finnish language and culture, at many skill levels, in a number of locations in Finland.

All the courses are worth 10 ECTS credits. The student receives free tuition, study materials, and accommodation. Students from universities in the Nordic countries pay for their accommodation with the scholarship they receive from their own countries.

Who are the courses intended for?

Summer courses in Finnish language and culture are intended for those who are students of Finnish language and culture at universities outside Finland during the current academic year. You must be at least 18 to attend.

Students from universities in the Nordic countries can now apply for all courses.

Goals and contents of the courses

The goal of the language courses is to activate and develop the language skills of the student in an authentic linguistic setting. The courses offer revision of grammatical topics as well as exercises in reading, writing, listening and – above all – speaking, as Finnish is the only language spoken at the course.

The summer courses are an intensive form of study, with homework and preparation of the final assignments, so the students are expected to commit to their studies.

At the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate. To receive the certificate, the students must take part in the course for its entire duration and participate actively in in-class and out of class activities.

How to apply for the courses?

Applications should be sent by 1 March at 11.59 pm Finnish time (+2 UTC).

After this, the electronic application system will be closed, and you will not be able to submit an application.

The applicants will be informed of the decision by 30 April by email.

Some of the applicants will be accepted on a waiting list. If someone cancels participation at the course, a notification will be sent in May or June.

EDUFI will retain the applications for two years. We need the personal information for selecting participants in the courses and organising the courses. The information will only be given to the course organiser, to no one else (further information in Finnish: kesäkurssien tietosuojaseloste).

Instructions for students

If you have attended a course organised by CIMO/EDUFI before, you can only apply for a course on a higher skill level.

In addition to the application form, you will need a teacher’s statement and two texts, of which your teacher can provide details.

Students can apply for a travel grant from EDUFI. The grant is applied for when filling in the electronic application form. You cannot apply for a travel grant afterwards. If a student drops out of the course, the grant may be recovered.
