Summer courses in Finland

Each summer, the Finnish National Agency for Education organises intensive courses in the Finnish language and culture, at many skill levels, in a number of locations in Finland.

All the courses are worth 10 ECTS credits. The student receives free tuition, study materials, and accommodation.

Who are the courses intended for?

Summer courses in the Finnish language and culture are intended for students of Finnish language and culture from universities outside Finland. You must be at least 18 to attend.

Goals and contents of the courses

The goal of the language courses is to activate and develop the language skills of the student in an authentic linguistic setting. The courses offer revision of grammatical topics as well as exercises in reading, writing, listening and – above all – speaking, as Finnish is the only language spoken at the course.

The summer courses are an intensive form of study, with homework and preparation of the final assignments, so the students are expected to commit to their studies.

At the end of the course, the students will receive a certificate evaluating their performance. Elements influencing the evaluation include active in-class participation, and written and oral assignments. To receive the certificate, the students must take part in the course for its entire duration.

How to apply for the courses?

Applications should be sent by 1 March at 11.59 pm Finnish time (-2 UTC).

After this, the electronic application system will be closed, and you will not be able to submit an application.

The applicants will be informed of the decision by 30 April by email.

Some of the applicants will be accepted on a waiting list. If an attendee cancels participation at the course, a notification will be sent in May or June.
