Teaching visits of university teachers

Each year, the Finnish National Agency for Education sends out 15-20 teachers and researchers from Finnish universities as visiting teachers to foreign universities which offer teaching of the Finnish language and culture.

What is a teaching visit?

  • Teaching visits are intensive courses on Finnish language and culture.
  • They compliment the teaching of the host universities.
  • Their content should fit into the study programme of students and the local curriculum.
  • The teaching language is predominantly Finnish.

The teaching visit’s topic is decided by the institution itself on the basis of its own needs. Most lectures have been on the subjects of Finnish language and literature. Courses have also been organised on, for example, translation, cultural history, and the Sami language and Sami culture.

The duration of a teaching period is 5-10 days, which includes a minimum of 12 and a maximum 25 hours of lectures. The teaching period may include advance assignments as well as a final exam or a final work.

The Finnish National Agency for Education pays the visiting teacher a salary and reimburses subsistence and travel expenses. Accommodation should be arranged and paid for by the host university.

How to apply for a teaching visit?

  • The call for applications is published in April through the mailing list ukanet.
  • The deadline for applications is 31 May.
  • Applications are submitted for the following calendar year.
  • Universities are informed about the decision in August/September.

Application form (doc) (in Finnish)

During autumn, the Finnish National Agency for Education will organize an open call for applications for lecturers for teaching visits for Finnish specialists. The Finnish National Agency for Education sends the applications to the receiving institution which makes the final selection. In case there are several applicants, the Finnish National Agency makes a pre-selection.

Practical arrangements

The contact person at the Finnish National Agency for Education will coordinate between the Finnish university sending the visitor, and the foreign university receiving the visitor (contact the visitor and agree on the reimbursement of costs etc.).

The coordinator of the receiving institution shall agree directly with the lecturer on the details of the teaching visit (the contents of the course, the method of realisation, the date and time, the duration etc.).

The Finnish National Agency for Education takes care of the transfer of funds with the Finnish university which sends the visiting teacher. The transfer of funds will not at any stage take place through the receiving university.

Reporting

The coordinator of the receiving institution shall submit a report on the visit to the Finnish National Agency for Education no later than two months from the end of the visit.
