Visiting Finnish language and culture teachers sent by Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI)

EDUFI sends out 18 visiting lecturers and one visiting professor to universities outside Finland that offer studies in Finnish language and culture.


EDUFI’s lecturers are based in Archangel, Beijing, Bratislava, Budapest, Cluj-Napoca, Debrecen, Iževsk, Paris, Petrozavodsk, Poznan, Prague, Riga, Seattle, Szeged, Tallinn, Tartu, Vilnius and Warsaw.

Lecturer’s duties vary from university to university but her/his main task is to teach Finnish language, literature and culture.

Lecturer’s appointment is maximum of five years.


Visiting professorship circulates every five years. The Universities may apply to be a hosting university.

In 2013 - 2018 the visiting professor works at the University of Warsaw and from 2019 onwards at the Vilnius University.

The aim is to provide the highest level of university education and thesis supervision, improve scientific research, develop the curriculum and strenghten education and research exchange in the field of Finnish language and culture.

The field of research and education of the professor is decided by the University.

The visiting teachers will receive a salary that corresponds to the Finnish salary level. The costs are shared between EDUFI and the hosting university.

The hosting university must fulfil the following criteria:

  • The teaching of Finnish language and culture is part of the curriculum.
  • The university is committed to developing the contents and status of the Finnish language and culture. The aim should be to achieve a BA and/or MA status for the subject.
  • There are enough students interested in studying Finnish at the university.
  • The working conditions (teaching, working and library facilities, use of computers and copy machines) have to be acceptable.
  • The university pays the teacher an equal salary to local teachers.
