Brief Description:

The North-South-South Network “Quality Teacher Education as Cornerstone for Sustainable Development” has, in its current and past forms, always aimed at improved interaction, mutual learning and capacity building in teacher education in the partner countries.

The focus of the Network is in the examination of the structures of teacher education and their vital role in the societies, especially from the view point of sustainable development and its social, cultural, ecological and economical dimensions. The special focus of the network is to promote research-based approach in teacher education which is a condition for quality teacher education which, in turn, has an effect on the societies through improving the conditions, quality and access of education. The task involves conducting contextually relevant research in teacher education and, in general, to introduce more research in teacher education that will eventually contribute to the raising of its status and the status of the teacher profession. The thematic areas explored in the Network include human rights, gender equality and equality in general, and societal stability and democracy through enhanced teacher education and by focusing in active citizenship education. The Network has enabled 106 student and 61 teacher mobilities between Finland and the Southern partners through exchanges and Intensive course since 2004.

Interesting Success Stories Related to the NSS Network Co-operation:

The student and staff exchanges and the intensive courses have expanded the horizons of the participants and enabled new kind of thinking for changes through the comparative perspective and mutual cooperation. Some students in the programme have gone onwards to their doctoral degrees and work in influential positions within teacher education. The staff members have also been able to utilise their experience with North-South-South to obtain positions where making change is no longer a distant possibility but a reality. In the case of the network Quality Teacher Education as a Cornerstone for Sustainable Development, the history of the Network would be very different without the founding members, Professor Rehabeam K. Auala from the University of Namibia and Professor Rauni Räsänen from the University of Oulu, who set the course for the long-lasting cooperation.
