Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA)

The goal of Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) is to develop the education sector in Africa.

ADEA was founded in 1988 with Finland taking part since 1996. ADEA receives support from the foreign ministry. CIMO operates as the national administrator for Finland’s participation in ADEA, meaning that it coordinates how Finns take part in the association.

Goals

ADEA maintains educational policy communications between the ministries of developing countries and financing countries, and strengthens the countries’ administrative and planning capacity. These operations cover the entire education sector, from early childhood education to higher education and adult education.

ADEA operates as a discussion forum, information provider and intermediary and it promotes the sharing of good practice policies among African countries. At the same time it promotes integration on a continental level as well as regionally.

ADEA has partnered with the African union and African Development Bank (AfDB) and its secretarial office is based in Tunis at an African Development Bank branch.

Finland’s participation in ADEA

The goal of Finland’s participation is to strengthen the preconditions of education in Africa that would support sustainable development on a regional level. This will be realised through establishing educational policy dialog and taking advantage of research information. At the same time, the objective is to gain knowledge and cooperation for Finland’s educational development work and to add interest towards development issues in education at Finnish universities.

Finland participates in the activities of four workgroups, that are

  • education policy and leadership,
  • higher education,
  • teacher training and
  • early childhood education.

ADEA general assembly

ADEA’s general assembly is organized every 3rd year and traditionally ministers of education from almost all African countries have taken part in it. The next Triennial will take place February 12-17, 2012, in Burkina Faso and its theme is Promoting critical knowledge, skills and qualifications for sustainable development in Africa:How to design and implement an effective response through education and training systems?

Who may participate?

The target group in Finland is primarily university and technical college teaching and research staff, who are interested in developing education in Africa. Participants are expected to have an applicable educational background (doctoral degree preferred) and demonstrate that their research interests deal with developing education in Africa. Previous work experience and personal motivation also have an effect in the selection process.

Advantages are work experience in Africa and a connection to a research group that concentrates on development issues in Africa or on a broader scope, and teaching work relating to it. Participation in a work group will be compensated.
